A scalable psychoacoustic low bit-rate audio compression technique has been developed for workstation and personal computer platforms. Once a file has been encoded, the operation of the decoder can be scaled according to the computing resources available. Scalable decoding selectively processes the compressed audio content and thereby controls the processor loading. Therefore, a common compressed data format may be decoded with a playback quality which depends only on the amount of computing resources provided in a playback platform or software application.
