Use of Low Bit-Rate Coding for High Quality Audio Over Telephone Lines

The subject of this paper is conveying high quality audio over digital telephone lines between remotely located postproduction studios. The use of low bit-rate audio coding, the constraints of the transmission medium, the advantages and drawbacks of the configuration selected, and synchronization are among the issues discussed. As current applications demonstrate and future possibilities suggest, high-quality digital audio transmission over telephone lines can provide an efficient, cost-effective solution in many situations.
