High-Quality, Low-Rate Audio Transform Coding for Transmission and Multimedia Applications

The design of an adaptive transform coder which exploits time-domain as well as frequency-domain psychoacoustic models is presented. The filter bank allows for optimal representation of both transitory and stationary events, ensuring excellent fidelity. A cost-effective implementation using general purpose digital signal processing (DSP) chips or custom very large scale integration (VLSI) circuits is introduced. Finally it is shown how the coder design is optimized to satisfy the requirements of applications ranging from multimedia to digital audio broadcasting.
