DSP technology is now being used for active noise control systems. When applied to building HVAC systems, active noise control can reduce low-frequency noise from the airhandler. An infinite impulse response (IIR) adaptive filter approach enables the controller to compensate for acoustic feedback from the loudspeaker to an upstream input microphone, allowing the system to cancel random, broadband noise. These systems, in active/passive hybrid form, have been applied to recording studio installations to achieve background levels approaching NC 15.
