High Dynamic Range Audio Applications for Digital Signal Processing

Application of digital signal processing to audio is often limited by available converter technology and recorder data width to processes with controlled dynamic range. In digital mixing consoles, some analog gain control is normally required to achieve adequate performance for the input channel ADCs and digital multitrack recorders. This paper examines such dynamic range bottlenecks and derives specifications for typical applications. Equipment that has been designed to these specifications is described.
