Room Acoustical Simulation Algorithms Compared

Room impulse response (RIR) simulation by computer has become the standard means of simulating source-listener acoustical transmission characteristics. However, the specific details of the different impulse response simulation algorithms possible for arbitrarily shaped rooms vary greatly. This paper examines the characteristics of ray tracing and image method RIR simulation techniques and provides a comparative study of their performance which highlights the application-dependent nature of the tradeoffs that must be made between accuracy and efficiency.
