Multichannel Sound Reproduction Based on Wavefield Synthesis

The concept of wavefield synthesis based on the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral equation is applied to obtain a new method of multichannel sound recording and reproduction for surround-sound applications. The aim is to obtain a good virtual sound-source localization for a large listening area. The paper discusses the principles of the method and the possibility of reducing the number of sound channels and loudspeakers without degradation of the reproduction quality.
