The principle difference between FM stereo and FM monophonic broadcast receivers is that the former contains a stereo adapter or demodulator. This stereo demodulator can essentially be divided into two parts-the stereo signal detector and the 19Kc/s pilot receiver. In this paper we will discuss block diagrams of various pilot receivers followed by general considerations for the design of a doubler type receiver. From here we will examine a tube and transistor pilot receiver design in detail investigating circuit Q, intermodulation, harmonic distortion and circuit stability problems. Finally, coil stability will be examined, and the results for two coil samples presented.
