New Test Methods for Digital Audio Data Compression Algorithms

Digital audio data compression produces five new types of distortion. These distortions can be seen in the waveforms and spectra of simple test signals, and heard in program material with similar time or frequency characteristics. The test signals can be used to study an algorithm prior to extensive listening tests, either to select appropriate test material, or to eliminate low quality algorithms from a comparative test program.
