The assessment of low bit-rate audio coding systems for broadcasting applications normally involves conducting subjective tests. Measurement methods have been devised for assessing audio quality, but at the present time broadcasters are still relying on assessments conducted by listeners.: In recent years, the BBC has been heavily involved in listening tests for the Eureka 147 Digital Audio Broadcasting project and for the CCIR. All aspects of this work, including the selection of critical program material, the editing and recording of the processed and unprocessed material, the running of the tests, and the analysis of results, can be very time consuming, and need to be carried out with care.: This paper describes the work carried out at the BBC`s Research Department in the testing of low bit-rate codecs, and presents some of the results obtained.
