We are moving through an era of transition from analog audio systems to those that are computer-controlled and some that are fully digital. The unresolved problem is the need of these new systems to be nearly perfect in real time. Current analog systems are reliable and fault tolerant. Yet, the glitches that are common in computer networks and digital transmission systems are unacceptable to users of large-scale audio systems, such as theme parks, performing arts centers, and stadiums where even a momentary lapse in delivery can be devastating. The authors stress that the audio industry cannot be negligent and ask users of these systems to tolerate a reduced level of reliability while we -work out the bugs,- and realize the benefits of this new technology.
