Multimedia at Professional Audio, Video, and Broadcast Levels

The worlds of audio, video, broadcasting and computing are rapidly coming to share many common elements. The -digital revolution- is the common theme that lays claim to unprecedented creative capabilities with all manner of media. The magic word is multimedia. This term, however, is ill-defined and subsequently misleading. At the hobbyist level misinterpretation is not normally of serious consequence. However, for the professional audio and visual industries, the range of multimedia possibilities must be clearly understood, lest systems and software are selected that create islands of incompatible technologies and/or will not scale up to professional demands.
