This paper investigates the use of an oversampled one bit signal representation, such as sigma-delta modulation, as a possible recording format. The paper first reviews both the requirements of a mastering format and one bit coding techniques. The many advantages of such a format, especially with respect to quality, error performance, compatibility, operational use and extendibility, are then discussed. It is also shown the signal can be easily converted to consumer sample rates. The problems of such a format, and their possible solutions, are then discussed. The paper concludes with recommended parameters for a one-bit recording format.
