This paper reviews the problem of quantisation, the use of dither to prevent quantisation distortion and noise modulation, and then discussed noise-shaping - a method which reduces the perceived level of noise due to the addition of dither by up to 18dB. A significant emphasis is placed on measurements and listening tests which can be performed to show whether a system has been correctly dithered and noise-shaped.
