A Variable-Bit-Rate Buried-Data Channel for Compact Disc

Buried data techniques can be applied to increase the information density of a CD channel in a backward compatible way. A buried data encoder consisting of a subtractively dithered noise-shaped quantizer encodes an additional service into the CD signal without causing perceptual difference. In this paper we will review the encoder with fixed parameters resulting in a fixed capacity for the additional service. In addition we will describe a method where the encoder parameters are input signal dependent. By exploiting input-signal masking properties a variable capacity of a higher average value is obtained.
