AB - FIR filters may be easily designed having arbitrary magnitude response characteristics and linear or nonlinear phase making them highly useful for audio applications. In the past the use of such filters has been limited by the length of filter which may be practically implemented. Using the fast convolution algorithm in real time, this limitation may be overcome. This has been done, and a stereo 32768 tap filter produced. The theory of operation of this filter is discussed. An example application, a third octave liner phase equalizer, is also discussed and compared to a more traditional design. Preliminary listening test results are presented.
