Design Considerations of a High-Level Coaxial Point Source

Traditionally high level sound reinforcement has depended upon large arrays of multiple driver systems. Their sound quality is limited due to severe lobing as a result of several offset sources. Described here are design goals, methods, and results of a processor controlled, coaxial point source system. By increasing the output capability of the coax system fewer acoustic sources are needed, improving array performance. Array modeling software was used to optimize the design and packaging of the system. A constant directivity horn with large format compression driver provides low distortion, and accurate coverage over the critical vocal range.
