Headphone Signal Processing System for Out-of-the-Head Localization

Abstract

During loudspeaker reproduction the signals from each speaker are transmitted to both ears (crosstalk). Head and pinna diffraction results in a directional filtering. If headphones are used the crosstalk and the head/pinna filtration is removed. This is the main reason for the observed in-the-head localization (IHL). In this paper a signal processing system is described, based on FIR filters which reintroduce crosstalk and the directional head/pinna filtering.
