To eliminate or reduce poor loudspeaker array performance caused by phase interference effects, the so called lobing or comb-filter effects, a sound system designer usually tries to align the loudspeaker devices so that the radiating wave fronts are coherent. This conventional concept works wellin rooms such as recording studios where there is a single critical listening location. In an auditorium or a gymnasium, however, the listening area is large and consists of many locations. Therefore, conventional alignment methods cannot be applied. In this paper, the effects of phase interference in sound reinforcement are clearly revealed. A fundamental analysis of this problem is shown and a new and innovative solution is described.
