The degrading effect of the manipulation of digital audio data through digital signal processing, and digital interfacing is not fully understood, particularly in terms of the relative severity of the degradation. A simple method using DSP analysis has been devised to detect signal degradation when it occurs and isolate the nonlinear behavior, to permit evaluation of its relative severity. To demonstrate the residue method, the following cases of digital degradation (real and imagined) are examined: CD surface treatments, data cloning, data transmission, digital rounding, digital gain changing, digital equalization, digital dither, sample rate conversion, and digital noise filtering.
