Mechanisms of Unmusicality in Compact-Disc Sound: Measurements, Observations, and Conjectures

Authors: Schwede, Gary W.

AES Convention 91 · Paper 3145 · October 1991

Abstract

Many people hear audibly unmusical sound reproduction from compact-disk players, despite continuing distractions by unsound arguments from both subjectivists and objectivists. I have conducted some test-bench experiments which suggest where the problems aren't. I survey some physical mechanisms which certainly do cause errors and distortions, and examine implications for the design of better CD players.
