This paper presents a general theory of quadratic short-term spectral analysers suitable for measuring time/frequency behaviour of linear systems. A new class of super-resolving analysers is identified capable of resolving wanted detail below the uncertainty-principle limit, while reducing Wigner distribution beat-time and beat-frequency clutter. Remaining clutter is shown to have a psychoacoustic meaning. The paper contains a discussion of the optimisation of time/frequency resolution trade-offs to provide good correlations with the perceived subjective quality of linear systems.
