Optical Recording Technology: Can Optical Disks be Applicable to Digital Audio Workstations?

Recently, Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) have started to be used for precise editing of musical signals and synchronization between video and audio signals in audio-visual programs. A new recording medium with removability and large capacity is desired in DAW applications. The optical disk is one of the leading candidates for this purpose. In this paper, the principles, advantages and the future of optical recording technology are discussed, and the possibility that the next generation optical discs may be applicable to DAW have been shown.
