The acceptance of the -tapeless studio- throughout the industry has been slow due to a variety of performance factors associated with Winchester Disk systems as the primary recording media. These factors include, overall transfer bandwidth, maximum density and storage time, disk interface characteristics, backup mechanisms and data formats. However, disk-based recording offers certain significant capabilities beyond tape systems, especially random access, virtual track storage and interactive track slipping. A new disk IO system is described which provides maximum disk performance at reasonable cost per channel-minute.
