The DASH format for Digital Audio, Stationary-Head professional recording has now been in practical use for several years. A realistic assessment of its preferred areas of application is therefore possible. At the same time, new versions and features emerge, in response to changing requirements, and they will be reviewed in the paper`s introduction. The paper first attempts to differentiate between several main applications in professional audio, each characterized by clearly defined technical, economic and ergonomic requirements. Taking the DASH format as an example, the paper studies the cost-performance, media costs, user-friendliness and editing features achievable with stationary-head digital technology, and compares them with those of alternative technologies, such as analog, rotary-head recording and optical recording. The result is a matrix of applications and technologies, which indicates which application is best covered by which technology, and which helps identify the preferred areas of application of stationary-head digital recording for the years to come.
