A Compressed Digital Audio Transmission System

A novel method with which to compress digital audio program material is described and evaluated. The compression method maintains the fidelity of CD-quality source material and suppresses the slight increase in quantization distortion inherent in any compression scheme. In the absence of masking high-frequency program material, the most sensitive listening situation, signals are compressed and expanded with greatest precision due to the very nature of the compression scheme. The high-quality reproduction available with the new method is born out in both quantitative and qualitative results.
