The loudspeakers and acoustical environments used for sound recording and mixdown are not necessarily intended to mimic home listening rooms. The first part of this paper describes and categorizes typical North American mixdown rooms and consumer listening environments. Then, since recording engineers and audiophiles both include pro-and anti-horn activists, some characteristic differences between high frequency horns and direct radiator loudspeakers are investigated. Lastly, the ability of two-channel stereo reproduction to create a convincing phantom center image is discussed from the perspective of the author`s personal experience.
