The oft-stated quality advantages of digital audio apply equally to the audio tracks of VTRs. These advantages are only realized if certain practical considerations are appreciated. This paper examines some fundamental aspects of digital audio in VTRs, including a description of the use of Read-Modify-Write for sample-accurate audio editing, and the handling of audio interleave/de-interleave delays. Particular reference will be made to the source of the video synchronous audio sampling rate.
