A new format provides the opportunity to look again at the requirements of all aspects of the new system. This has resulted in a re-assessment of the requirements for the sound to accompany HDTV pictures. While there is agreement that more than two replay channels are needed, the exact number is still open to debate. The history and experience of the cinema industry should be taken into account when considering sound for HDTV.
