The Stereosurround Audio Production Format is a practical compatible 4-2-4 matrix encode/decode process derived from motion picture audio techniques that allows the generation of more realistic sound fields using four discrete-like reproduction channels that can be transmitted or stored on two conventional audio channels. Productions using this format include a variety of live and post production programs involving sports, comedy, drama, music entertainment, and product commercials. This paper focuses on the production environment and production techniques. A variety of live and post-production situations will be described as well as specific microphone and mixing techniques that have been developed to take full advantage of the format.
