In the early 1980s the IEC was faced with pressure from two directions to produce digital audio interfaces. One group of manufacturers were fresh from the success of the Compact Disc, even though that was not commercially launched at that date. The other group consisted of professionally based users on the whole.: Fortunately, and with much sense, goodwill and hard work, these two very diverse groups produced a single IEC standard (see Appendix 1) with very few practical differences between the Interface for -Consumer Use- and that for -Broadcasting or similar purposes-, to use the IEC descriptions.
