A single-board device that accesses data from magnetic disks, removable optical disks, or compact disks is connected via a signal processing chip to an AES/EBU stereo port, which can then be connected to DA and AD converters. This device can be used to record stereo audio onto the disk, and to play back all or parts of the sounds in varying orders with precisely controlled "in" and "out" points. This paper will focus on the hardware architecture of the device with some justification for the various tradeoffs that were made in choosing the amount of memory versus disk bandwidth for stereo audio processing. The final implementation includes 2 Mbytes of dynamic RAM, a 6 8000 processor, a TMS32010 signal-processor chip with 8 Kbytes of static RAM, an ethernet controller chip, a bidirectional A32D16 VME-bus interface, and an SCSI protocol controller chip for disk access. Each of the devices has direct memory access to the main memory and to the VME bus. The device may be used either in the backplate of a VME bus host computer, or in a standalone manner.
