In the short time since its adoption, multichannel, particularly stereo, sound has become a major factor in television production, broadcasting, and reception in the United States. This paper explains the technical aspects of the BTSC multichannel television sound system, and describes how it has been accepted among producers, distributors, and consumers of U.S. television programming. It also offers some reasons why the time was ripe for the acceptance of stereo sound by the American television industry and the viewing public. Finally, it discusses the effects of these stereo and high fidelity trends upon television equipment design.
