Surround-Sound System for HDTV and Experimental Study on Production Techniques

A discrete 4-channel surround sound system, with three channels in front of the viewers and the fourth channel at the rear of the viewers, is desirable as a sound system for high-definition television. In the practical production of programs, however, there are problems with recording techniques and technical facilities, and also the compatibility with conventional 2-channel reproduction. In order to clarify these problems, test recordings and subjective evaluations were carried out. The results and further studies required are discussed.
