My paper discusses the design of a real-time analog impulse noise deleter. It detects impulse noise on the basis of signal rise-time tracking. Removing the noise impulse is achieved by gating the signal with a suitable curve. Resulting drop-outs are masked by the low-frequency components of the signal. Thanks to this approach, eliminating even long impulses does not result in drop-outs in the output signal, characteristic to other circuits of similar concept. The prototype circuit designed and built by author is being successfully used for improving the quality of sound from old gramophone records at the Polish Radio Laboratory for Recordings Reconstruction.
