It is a fact that many technical problems are not realized and/or solved until equipment is in the hands of the end user, being used in a variety of applications. Digital audio is no exception, for as more digital audio equipment is employed, and operational experience gained, the problems of synchronization become increasingly important to designers and users alike. This paper attempts to provide a basic understanding of the problems associated with synchronization, such as jitter parameters, and their influence on the performance of high quality conversion systems. The paper also reflects ideas discussed within the AES working party on synchronization, and ideas from the authors` proposal to the AES.
