A comparative study of two methods for multidimensional perceptive measurement-similarity or proximity ratings and adjective or multicriteria ratings-was undertaken. The application involved assessment under listening conditions of the fidelity of speech transmission systems defined by progressive widening of the telephone speech band between 0 and 7 kHz. The investigation, strictly devoted to subjective aspect, had a double objective. Firstly, it gave rise to considerations of a methodological nature about the statistical performance and capacity for interpreting perceptive phenomena involved in each specific experimental procedure, and secondly, it brought about some development in the actual classification of the systems and their behavior regarding the notion of fidelity that we are attempting to develop on.
