A Robust Data Detection Method for Digital Audio Tape Recorders

The method described is designated Adaptive Run Processing. It is suitable for recording codes which contain a restricted number of discrete run-lengths. Inverse mapping of peak-shift caused by inter-symbol interference is used to reconstruct falsified runs. This mapping has been made adaptive with the aim for a best possible margin between consecutive runs. The paper describes how mapping tables are derived and how analog preprocessing stages and normal and adaptive run processors are implemented.
