Convention Paper

A High-Fidelity Differential Cardioid Microphone

Authors: Bartlett, Bruce

AES Convention 85 · Paper 2713 · November 1988

Abstract

Many musicians need a handheld vocal microphone with superior gain-before-feedback and isolation from ambient sounds. A new differential cardioid microphone was developed to meet these needs without sacrificing fidelity. This paper discusses design goals, physics of microphone feedback, differential operating principles, proximity effect, choice of polar pattern, microphone design, and testing.
