Over a period of about nine years the BBC has worked to improve the quality of speech sounds from diving helmets. Careful selection of equipment, detailed application of equalization, and active noise suppression are all essential in achieving the desired results. This paper describes the necessary signal processing in the context of two specific series of programs.
