Measurement Techniques for Sound System Performance Optimization

Sound system performance optimization includes anything which can be done to improve the performance of a sound system after it is installed. Areas of concern include listening area coverage, impedance matching, and level and delay setting, in addition to the more familiar response equalization and feedback suppression. Significant characteristics in all these areas can be measured rather easily, but seldom are. Furthermore, it is easy to show that the measurement techniques which are commonly used are inadequate. Preferred techniques for such measurements will be suggested, examples of results will be presented, and their significance will be discussed.
