Motion Sensing in Music and Dance Performance

Authors: Downes, Pat

AES Conference: 5th International Conference: Music and Digital Technology · Paper 5-015 · May 1987

Abstract

Musical instrument controllers which can sense the free motions of a performer's gestures are discussed by considering the type of gestures sensed, what instruments can be controlled, and how the controller relates in the input gestures to the output controls. Specific methods for sensing the kinematic state of the body in motion using gyros and accelerometers are described. The Airdrums, commercially available controllers of this type, are described.
