Abstract

A stationary-head compact-cassette digital tape recorder has been developed in combination with a metal-evaporated tape and ferrite head. Txe quantization is 16 bits linear, the sampling rate is 44.1 kHz, and the recording time is 1 h, realizing a performance equivalent to that of the compact disk. Though the base film thickness of 9 µm is equal to that of the usual C-90 tape, the magnetic layer thickness is as thin as 0.1 µm, enabling 1-h recording at speed of 95 mm/s. The high coercivity of 1000 Oe coupled with a high remanent flux density of 10 kG permits high recording density with a small number of tracks: 10 data tracks plus 2 user tracks. A new tape transport system has also been developed to provide stable transport, particularly in regard to tape tension and waving.
