AB - Differences in the sound qualities of linear- and nonlinear-phase loudspeakers are evaluated by simulating the phase responses of loudspeakers using all-pass filters. Test results indicate that the perception of phase distortion is highly dependent on individual ability, and that it is easier to detect phase distortion by headphone listening rather than by loudspeaker listening. Instantaneous frequency and instantaneous envelope are tentatively introduced as representations of a transient signal to give some indication of how transient signals sound.
