AB - The properties and operating principles of charge-coupled devices (CCD) are discussed. A recently developed CCD delay line of 256 bits, based on a 2-phase buried-channel CCD, is described. Attention is given to typical driving circuits and signal processing in such devices. The audio properties, such as dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio, and frequency bandwidth, and the advantages and disadvantages of CCD delay lines compared with other delay lines are discussed.
