At the request of several architects, a survey of existing school sound systems was made, in one of New York`s largest counties. The rate of school growth and consequent new construction has been tremendous since the last war, and of course requirements for school paging, music, and signalling systems have increased in direct proportion to this building program. The control console for a central sound system is almost always located in the school`s general office, and its operation is tacitly undertaken by one or more of the secretaries whose desks are nearby. The need for simple, readily understood controls to accomplish normal paging and to supply music at lunch time is self evident. Office personnel are not trained specifically to operate technical facilities, and it is a rare school indeed which can afford a fulltime operator for switchboard and console applications.
