A chamber driven by multiple woofers was used to investigate perceptual phenomena produced by pure-tones from 5 Hertz to 100 Hertz, at sound pressure levels up to 130 dB. The attribute of pitch was studied and the lower limit of tonal fusion was charted as a function of sound pressure level. Under the conditions used, pitch could be perceived at frequencies as low as ten to twelve Hertz, thus extending the known limits of human pitch perception by nearly an octave.
