A study of sound images produced by loudspeakers in typical listening rooms pointed up the importance of the interaural crosscorrelation coefficient (IACC) in determining the impression of distance, strength, and clarity in the overall sound image. To permit quantitative evaluation of IACC, a simple, direct readout correlation meter was developed. Studies using the simplified measurement techniques revealed marked variations in IACC due to loudspeaker construction and installation. The effect of these variations, even though transmission frequency response and reverberation time are practically equal, is a notable change in clarity, strength, and perceived distance of the sound image. The result is that a higher IACC tends to be more desirable in terms of the quality of the sound image.
