AB  - With the advent of the Compact Disc and the proliferation of digital audio tape recorders it would appear that digital audio will soon be available on a very broad scale. It seems only reasonable, then, to expect that the next step will be to digitize the production of the sound that these media carry. Simulation of the music production equipment currently in use requires a great deal of signal processing power that is not readily available on commercial computers at this time, but is now available on an experimental basis at reasonably competitive cost in a few places around the world through the use of special-purpose digital audio signal processors. In general terms the problem of digital audio processing is discussed, and some suggestions are prescribed for the builders of such devices.
