Voice coil temperature is a major cause of loudspeaker damage and failure. It increases according to electrical input and according to the overall heat transfer coefficient of the voice coil. This overall coefficient is a direct result of a variety of heat transfer mechanisms, including conduction, radiation, natural convection, forced convection and heat storage. An analysis (including transient behavior) is presented which includes all factors and provides a final equation for voice coil temperature as a function of electrical input and loudspeaker parameters. The analysis also points to a novel method of heat transfer for all loudspeakers (U.S. Patent #3991286, by the author, assigned to the Altec Corporation).
